Dr. Perricone’s 3-tiered philosophy for healthy aging and beautiful skin is the foundation of his holistic approach. This program consists of an anti-inflammatory diet, supplements and topicals. Each tier counteracts inflammation at the cellular level.

As is often the case, the most effective remedies involve both an oral and topical component, each working to enhance the effects of the other. Pycnogenol has proven to be no exception. When both tiers are used synergistically, studies have found the following benefits:
Thanks to extensive studies conducted by its parent company Horphag Research, Pycnogenol has been found to be a safe and effective way to achieve a fair skin free of the dark spots or patches safely and without any side-effects. More than 190 scientific articles and clinical trials have confirmed Pycnogenol’s safety, absence of toxicity and clinical efficacy over the past 35 years. In fact, Pycnogenol® is one of the most researched ingredients in the natural product marketplace. Published findings have demonstrated Pycnogenol’s beneficial effects in cardiovascular health, skincare, cognitive function, diabetes health, inflammation, sports nutrition, asthma and allergy relief and menstrual disorders, among others.
Supplements and Skin Care
In addition to the complete spectrum of vitamins and minerals recommended by nutrition experts world-wide, (B-complex, Vitamin E, calcium-magnesium, etc.) Here are some recommended supplements. I recommend other nutrients to banish dull skin.
Fish for Compliments
Fish is the only natural and significant food source of the healthy Omega 3 fat, EPA and DHA. In addition to eating fish such as salmon and halibut, take plenty of high quality omega 3 fish oil. Luminous, radiant, wrinkle-free skin, improved mental faculties, weight loss, preservation of muscle mass, enhanced absorption of nutrients from foods, and a happy, positive mood are just a few of the benefits accrued by incorporating the omega 3’s into our daily diets.
Back in Circulation
Take alpha lipoic acid supplements because it has the capacity to regulate the production of nitric oxide, which controls blood flow to the skin. When alpha lipoic acid is applied topically, it helps to transform the complexion from dull, pasty, and pale to vibrant and glowing. It will shrink pores, even out skin tone, decrease lines and wrinkles and eliminate puffiness.
Light and Bright
Pycnogenol® also has superior anti-inflammatory properties, making it ideal in promoting youthful, beautiful skin and healthy aging of all organ systems. When taken as a supplement and applied topically, Pycnogenol will significantly brighten skin.

Introducing Stress and the Skin (An Alfred Hitchcock Production)
It is not just the telomeres that suffer when we are under stress. When we study stress and its effects on the skin, we can clearly begin to see the “psycho” part of psychoneuroimmunology.
For decades a great many common skin diseases and disorders were listed as having an unknown etiology—that is, dermatologists could not pinpoint the cause of the disease. But now there is a growing body of clinical and experimental evidence demonstrating that the brain can start, influence, and stop biologic skin events. Again, this clearly ties into my Brain-Beauty Connection, an exciting topic for future blogs. For example, there is evidence that psychological stress both constitutes an increased risk for atopic dermatitis, a pruritic (itching) skin disease, and also influences the disease’s clinical course. And who hasn’t had an acne breakout right before the prom, a big date, wedding or important job interview? Coincidence? Think again. Stress is clearly implicated in many skin diseases, acne included, another fascinating topic for future blogs. Tomorrow we will learn how neuropeptides and pheromones can help alleviate stress.
Recent studies have shown ALA is an even more powerful antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory agent than previously thought; however, therapeutic amounts can only be obtained from supplements, because it is almost non-existent in foods.
Alpha lipoic acid is unique among antioxidants because it is soluble in both fat and water. This gives it the ability to penetrate the lipid or fat soluble portions of the cell, such as the cell’s first line of defense, the cell plasma membrane. In addition, it can also penetrate the watery portions of the cell, known as the cytosol. Because ALA can protect both the fat- and water-soluble parts of the cell, scientists have named it the “universal antioxidant.” ALA is found as part of an enzyme complex in the mitochondria that converts food to energy, it is also known as the “metabolic antioxidant.” Diseases of aging are caused by the damage and inflammation that result from free radical damage to the cells. Since ALA can protect all portions of the cell, it is ideally suited to help prevent the diseases of aging and the signs of aging in the skin…
Barbecue right for better skin
One of the joys of summertime is a barbecue. Nothing tastes better than food cooked outdoors over an open fire. But, we now know that when you cook the muscle meats from beef, pork, fowl and fish, carcinogenic chemicals called heterocyclic amines (HCAs) are formed. In addition Advanced Glycation End Products [...]
