My research has shown that The Inflammation Aging Connection is the single greatest precipitator of aging and age-related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, and certain forms of cancer. It is also the cause of wrinkled, dull and sagging skin.
Inflammation is triggered by a wide variety of external factors such as ingestion of toxins, a weakened immune system, stress, as well as eating a pro-inflammatory diet, consisting of high glycemic carbohydrates that cause a rapid rise in blood sugar. Foods that are pro-inflammatory include all forms of sugar, processed foods, pasta, breads, pastry, baked goods, and snack foods such as rice and corn cakes, chips and pretzels.
Sugar, which is difficult to avoid, is found not only in obvious foods such as candy and ice cream, but also in less obvious foods such as yogurt and condiments. It’s important to learn to read labels and recognize all forms of sugars, such as corn syrup, in order to make the best food choices.
Too much sugar in the body can also accelerate the signs of aging on the skin. Sugar, and foods that rapidly convert to sugar, can permanently attach to the collagen present in our skin and other parts of the body through a process known as glycation. At the point of attachment, there is a small mechanism creating inflammation, which then becomes a source of inflammation in its own right. This inflammation produces enzymes that break down collagen, resulting in wrinkles.
Over consumption of sugar has also contributed to the obesity epidemic in the country affecting all age groups, from pre-schoolers and teens to adults and seniors. Even our pets are getting pudgy!
I recently saw David A. Kessler, M.D. on the CBS Sunday Morning show speaking out against the evils of sugars and over consumption of salt. I applaud Dr. Kessler for his work in continuing to bring this issue to light.
