The Perricone Lifestyle- A family affair.

I was very excited when I noticed an email introducing a health challenge from Dr. Perricone. I generally eat healthy and have read all of Dr. Perricone’s books. I try to follow an anti-inflammatory diet, but this time of year a challenge is a great way focus more on the importance of following these principles on a daily basis. This year I decide that not only would I try the challenge, but I would have my entire family join me. This consists of my husband and four year old son. They also generally follow a healthy diet; but I am quite sure my husband may fit in a lot of the foods I don’t serve at home when he is at work. My son doesn’t have much choice being four, so he was just along for the ride. He is not your typical four year old as his favorite foods are sushi, shrimp and oatmeal! I made a few changes for him such as more grains and a few healthy treats like organic goat milk gelato with berries and wheat free oatmeal peanut butter cookies made with honey.

I felt great after two days of following the plan. My cravings for foods were gone and often I did not need the snacks. I really did need to lose weight, but I was able to reduce my body fat 3% points which is something I have been trying to do for years, and also lost 3 pounds. We eat a plant based diet with the exception of seafood. I think the additional protein I added with the Fresh Challenge really seemed to help. My skin looks great, better than it has in years. I am quite sure the addition of a few wonderful Perricone products didn’t hurt! Overall I was really happy I started the challenge.

What I didn’t expect was the amazing improvement my husband would see. He totally jumped on board with the challenge. He decided to give up beers with coworkers and the typical lunch with clients. I sent him to work with salad, fish and berries and quinoa. We even found great precooked steel cut oatmeal and egg white veggie soufflé bowls at Costco for mornings when we didn’t have time for breakfast at home. His results were nothing less than amazing! He suffered from acid reflux and had to take medication daily, had frequent back pain due to a ruptured disk from an old injury, and high cholesterol despite watching his fat intake. His body benefited the most from this anti-inflammatory diet. I should actually say lifestyle as I don’t like the word diet. He noticed his heartburn was virtually gone with the exception of once or twice after something spicy, and is only taking medication as needed instead of daily. He also did not need to take Advil for back pain which occurred several times a week. The most amazing result was his reduction in bad cholesterol. He went for his annual check up and was astounded to learn he dropped his LDL cholesterol from 153 to 120! I had been worried about this for years and his doctor was talking about the need for a cholesterol medication. He also lost a few pounds even thought he is at a healthy weight.

My son really loved helping with growing watercress.  I was able to find watercress once or twice at our grocery store and after reading about the amazing health benefits I decided my family could not go weeks without this nutritional powerhouse. I purchased seeds and started growing watercress in my Aero garden (a hydroponic home growing system). He loves watering and feeding the plants and checking to see how much they grow each day. We have loved all the wonderful recipes we tried and created some of our own. Thank you for this amazing opportunity to not only look and feel better, but to improve our health. Dear Perriconistas,

These past 28 days have been miraculous for me.  I have used Perricone products for almost 10 years now, but recently, because of my participation in the challenge,  added a few items to my beauty ritual that have resulted in what can only be called a miracle.  Acyl-Glutathione Eyelid Serum and BLUE PLASMA(!!!) have created a transformation in my face.  I was beginning to wonder if eyelid surgery was needed, like some of my friends my age (65) have had.  But the Eyelid Serum worked wonders shrinking that lazy fold in about a week!  I can feel its tightening power instantly and after 28 days, it’s not lazy anymore. After a year or so of all work, no play, way too many starchy carbs and sugars, and even though I knew better… even putting my regular fitness routine on the back burner in lieu of time spent working… I was ready to get these things back on track.

Having been a follower of the Perricone program, on and off, since the ‘The Wrinkle Cure’ and ‘The Perricone Prescription’, I was already familiar with, and a believer in, the diet and theory of the program, and it would have been my program of choice… once I came around to choosing…

Seeing the post for the Start Fresh Challenge on Pinterest was just perfect timing for me. If there was going to be a sign that it was time to get things back on track, this was it…And… at the age of 48, I am also interested in aging gracefully.

I coach my clients to discover their thoughts, beliefs, and feelings about an area of their life that they would like to experience change in… and it’s always a big surprise (to them, not me)… that the thoughts, beliefs, and feelings they have go back to such a young age… an age when they probably weren’t even reasoning these ideas they now carry as personal truths, but more so just taking it all in…

And I believe that, like everything else in our lives, much of what we think, believe, and feel about how we should be aging is like a road map of aging we laid out for ourselves many years ago, via our observations of our mothers, grandmothers, and society as a whole.  And, while the aging process is inevitable, I believe we do have the ability to re-draw that map… to the degree that we can alter our thoughts, beliefs, and feelings about it.

Just yesterday, I was at a hair salon, and just in the short time I was there, I overheard another customer stating, “Watch that area there, you know how hair thins as we age.” And my own hairdresser said, “I told my husband he is old. I told him, “Look at yourself, you’re 50… you’re old.” ”

I’m not saying these people are wrong in their observations… the body is going to follow the road map we have laid out for it… but I am saying, I believe we have some choice over the map we choose to continue following.

This is a huge win for me… thank you!

And now, my personal gains and losses…

In following the program, my crazy carbohydrate cravings were gone within a few days, my energy skyrocketed about the same time, and my skin took on that healthy ‘Perricone’ glow just a short time later.

I don’t do scales, so I don’t know the pounds lost, but judging by my clothes… my jeans, that I couldn’t fasten by at least 3 inches and were pulling in the thighs, now fit beautifully.

I feel great! I have my nutrition and fitness back on track… I’m making time for working out again and I love it! Thank you for giving me the extra incentive I needed… at just the right time…

Here is 2nd place winner Linda’s Start Fresh testimonial:

Three years ago, when I was 61, I had a stroke.  I didn’t expect it.  Thanks to the actions of some very well trained EMTs, I suffered few consequences.  Seriously, 24 hours later, I was upset that I was missing a hairdressing appointment. 2 years later, I had foot surgery that went very, very wrong.  Clopping around in bulky orthopedic shoes, I fell down the stairs and fractured my back.  I was lucky not to have fractured my skull.

While I knew that I should have been happy that I was still alive, I couldn’t stop feeling frail and old.  I was depressed.  Since I was rather homebound, I started looking on the Internet for things to make me feel better.  I mean make up and diets, not weird love entanglements with prison inmates.

That’s when I came across Dr. Perricone.  I began to order product such as No Foundation, Blue Plasma, and a number of other goodies.  From the first, I found that I was looking better.  I know looks aren’t the important thing, but when you’re feeling sad, any sort of improvement makes a huge difference.

While convalescing and unable to walk, I also found that I was gaining weight.  Great.  This new development was just one more thing to make me feel horrible about myself.  I was trying a diet system that I saw on TV one afternoon. I tried it for a few weeks and saw little improvement.  My arthritis was worse (yes, I have that too), I lost only a few pounds and I still had no energy.

And then, I discovered Dr. Perricone’s diet.  I figured, what the hell, let’s give this a go.  2 weeks into the diet and I no longer walked with a cane.  My doctor remarked that I might not be putting his kid through college as he had originally planned.  My neighbor, when seeing me walking the dog with the husband, said that she hasn’t seen me look as healthy and happy in years.  Okay, she also said young, but I don’t want to sound conceited.

I feel great, I’m losing weight and I don’t feel like I’m starving myself.  Also, my husband and I are having a pretty great time cooking together, unlike that last diet plan where I just threw something into the microwave.

Don’t get me wrong, I still cheat from time to time – I can’t watch a movie without chocolate – but this diet is something I’m making part of my day-to-day life.  I’m not saying that Dr. Perricone’s diet is a miracle cure-all for everything, but I am saying that I feel a hundred times better using this program. And I look a hundred times better, too.

This is an abbreviated testimonial from our second place winner Rosanna P. 

What a Great Challenge! Thanks Dr. Perricone. I’ve lost 8 lbs and feel so much better and am enjoying the benefits to my skin. It actually feels softer and more supple. There is a definite clarity as I have broken capillaries on my cheeks and they seem to have diminished. As a working single mom, being mindful of making sure I follow the 28 day challenge guidelines was challenging. Especially when my focus is usually on others and not on myself. It was especially challenging when finding myself out for breakfast or lunch. For example, sniffing the freshly baked bagels in a bustling coffee shop, my mind would race trying to find my alternative menu. Great, it was easier to find than I thought; smoked salmon (minus bagel and cream cheese), sliced tomatoes and red onions – Perfect! I’m still not comfortable wearing jeans, but I can easily fit into a medium pants as I was inching towards a large…..Literally! Following the 28 day challenge and the variety of healthy foods and essential fats was like taking a boost of vitamins without the pills. Its amazing how enjoyable the food became when needing a snack of canteloup or leftover salmon. This is something I want to continue with and will follow other wonderful recipes Dr. Perricone recommends. I attached two photos to show the change in my skin which was taken a month apart and one of my favorite meals. I found by making it into a ritual, when possible, by using pretty plates, or decorative flatware made it esthetically appealing and would make me feel full, as it would make me eat slower and really savor the taste.

When I got an email from Dr. Perricone’s Start Fresh 28-day Challenge in February I thought, “I can dig a bit of challenge. I failed my New Year’s resolution of eating clean meals, prepping food in advance, exercising 5 days a week, taking care of my skin, and cutting out my sugar problem (this list goes on). But after reading more about the challenge incorporating exercise with a laid out meal plan and grocery list,  I was game! I told myself I didn’t make it in January but I can make another FRESH START in 28 Days in FEBRUARY!”

Planning was a bit challenging for me, all the prep and cooking was a hard for my jam packed schedule but I succeed that first week. After the first few days of all the salmon and blueberries I thought I was going to turn into one. I mean sugar is a stickler for me because I LOVE and indulge in chocolate and sugar confections. But I took shopping list and forged ahead, the ingredients were easy to find at my local Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods, shopping became an adventure. I loved the easiness of the grocery list grouped into produce; fruits, nuts, meats and jarred foods maximized my time at the market. The first two weeks of the menu had so many yummy foods, which were amazing! I especially like the Cod Braised with Bok Choy; the ginger touch was delightful to the taste buds. But I also must mention how hard it was when the sugar cravings came in and sugar is quite the addictive drug! I mean it was really the most challenging for me. When the cravings kicked in I called a friend to prevent me from falling off my fresh start. I would also go online and read something about how bad sugar is or watch motivational YouTube videos with people with nice skin and some videos about Perricone before and after. My last result always ended up with me stuffing an extra handful of blueberries or strawberries to satisfy my sweet tooth, which helped me.

 

Within the first two weeks I noticed that my skin was actually looking a bit livelier. I mean, maybe it was in my head but for some reason I believed there was a difference in the amount of acne, its like my pores clogged a bit less although there wasn’t any scientific evidence to prove it. I just started to feel that all my hard work was paying off. As my skin started to improve my confidence grew- I felt, pretty. I didn’t see my chin and cheeks with bumps and scars of pimples. Within the first week my mother came to visit (we see each other twice a month) and the sweet kind mother that she is, told me “Your skin is looking better what’s going on with you, are you in love?” I laughed because I wasn’t in love! I told her about some small changes in my diet and I did I started to exercise with a few yoga videos from cable TV On Demand I told her I was on a challenge. Her comment gave me pep in my step and the courage to move on.

By week 4, I have to say that my clothes are much looser I lost a few inches around my waist and thighs in addition to feeling lighter I am proud to say I dropped 5 pounds!

This has got to be one of the most difficult challenges I have done but proof as always is in the pudding’!  This was truly a challenge! The elimination of processed foods and that pure white sugar really helped me achieve these great results. I feel very grateful to have not only improved skin and better fitting clothes but I learned a new lifestyle. This is not just a fresh start but fresh lifestyle I will continue to live. If my skin has improved in just one month I can’t wait to see what my skin will look like in 3 months with all these omega 3 rich recipes! Thank you so much for giving me this fresh start!

Oh Dr. Perricone.

I took better care of my son’s turtle than I do myself.  I used to buy fresh raspberries for “TurboMan”, but not for myself.

The 28 Day Challenge changed all of that for me.

In order to get started, I had to pretend I was preparing my meals for someone else.  Initially, I did not have the motivation to do this for myself.  Over the past four weeks, I have eaten fresh salmon for the first time in my life and it was incredible. (I’m never buying frozen, inexpensive salmon again.)  I made sure I had pure water with me, healthy snacks and had so much fun shopping daily.  I had so much fun.  It was like a chess game, I employed strategies I never thought I would for myself.  But I did it.

I love homemade yogurt with fresh organic blueberries.  Even more than potato chips.  Imagine that. And I feel amazing.  I’m sleeping better, deeper and wake up before the alarm goes off. And I am T-Tapping with Theresa Tapp, every day, and walking. After I work out, I don’t feel pain, like I used to feel after vigorous workouts.  I have no pain.

Most importantly, this 28 day challenge taught me, to respect myself.  I’m ashamed to say that I am 55 and it took me this long to learn to respect and take care of myself, the way I care for others.  But I do now.

Start Fresh Spiced Pecans

Spiced Pecans

This is the perfect anti-inflammatory side dish or salad topper. You can also add cayenne pepper and chile to give these a subtle heat.

Ingredients

  • 1 egg white, lightly beaten
  • 3 cups pecan halves
  • 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Preparation

    1. Preheat the oven to 350F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    2. In a small bowl, beat the egg white with 1 tablespoon water. Stir in the pecans, mixing until well moistened.
    3. Combine the salt, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg in a small bowl. Sprinkle the mixture over the moistened nuts. Spread the nuts on the baking sheet.
    4. Bake for 30 minutes, stirring once or twice. Be careful not to burn the nuts. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container until ready to use.

Baked Kale Chips

Baked Kale Chips

Baked Kale chips are an ideal snack for Start Fresh or anyone following the anti-inflammatory diet. Low calorie, these dark leafy gems are packed with beneficial nutrients for radiant skin and healthy vision.

Ingredients

Serves 6

  • 1 bunch Kale
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon salt

Directions:

  1. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a non insulated cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. With a knife or kitchen shears carefully remove the leaves from the thick stems and tear into bite size pieces. Wash and thoroughly dry kale with a salad spinner. Drizzle kale with olive oil and sprinkle with seasoning salt.
  3. Bake until the edges brown but are not burnt, 10 to 15 minutes.

With many of us eating out or at an office desk, Lunch can be one of the trickiest meals to manage healthfully.

As always, Dr. Perricone recommends plenty of vegetables and at least 20 grams of protein at lunch along with a small amount of a healthy monounsaturated fat (like 1 teaspoon of olive oil or a few olives). A typical Perricone-inspired lunch may look like:

  • Grilled fish over a salad.
  • Lentil and vegetable soup with herbs and a salad.
  • Spinach salad with chicken or turkey.
  • Apple slices or berries for dessert.
