Even if you’re watching your weight or trying to maintain good health, it is possible to stay healthy when dining out. Just follow these simple guidelines:
- Choose fish or poultry that is broiled rather than fried.
- Avoid beef unless it is grass-fed. Many restaurants are now offering this option.
- Select olive oil and fresh lemon for your salad dressing.
- Instead of rice or potatoes choose broccoli, asparagus or other green vegetables.
- Skip the bread basket.
- Choose red wine instead of a cocktail.
What are your tips for staying healthy when eating out?

Ask for mustard instead of Mayo on sandwiches. Ask for lemon to squeeze over greens and veggies, it’s actually delicious to add a small amount on potatoes, which by the way is a nutritious vegetable. Go for tomato sauces versus cream sauces…..
Most of us KNOW what is fattening or just empty calories. Happy eating.
Fantastic advice. Happy eating to you as well!
~ No add ons in my salad; no crouton or cheese.
~ nothing “crusted” aka batter dipped and fried, or heavily sauced.
Great suggestions also. Eliminating croutons and cheese and replacing them with anti inflammatory raw nuts and veggies is the best way to slim down a salad.
-Eat salad or raw veggies first to encourage digestive enzymes.
-Avoid “bottom-feeders” when you choose seafood.
-Choose fish with scales and fins because they don’t absorb as many toxins.
Great tips Connie! Thanks for contributing.
Red wine instead of a cocktail is much more satisfying and not drying- A nutritionist suggested vodka- ugh! My skin was so dry the next day! Red wine is wonderful when I’m dieting as I don’t feel deprived at dinner.
Thanks Dr. Perricone.
