Pycnogenol’s Role in Bone Health

by

A study published in the journal Redox Report reveals Pycnogenol‘s anti-inflammatory potency in improving osteoarthritis symptoms and pain and in significantly lowering plasma levels of C-reactive protein (CRP).  With the disease progression of osteoarthritis, the inflammation may reach a level where it is no longer limited to the affected joint and stresses the organism, increasing the inflammatory marker CRP in the blood.  This study, a joint effort between Italy’s Chieti-Pescara University and the University of Munster, Germany, investigated a subset of 55 patients from a previous osteoarthritis study with 156 patients who had significantly elevated CRP levels.  Treatment consisted of two tablets daily of either 50 milligrams of Pycnogenol or a placebo.  Blood specimens were drawn at the beginning of the initial study and again after three months of treatment.  The results showed that Pycnogenol significantly lowered CRP from an average of 3.9 milligrams per liter at baseline to 1.1 milligrams per liter, an essentially healthy level.  In the placebo group, a marginally lowered CRP level was detected.  Other blood parameters indicative of acute inflammation likewise decreased with Pycnogenol, such as a fibrinogen (lowered by 37.1 percent) and reactive oxygen species (lowered by 29.9 percent).

Inflammation is the final common denominator of many diseases, so these findings come as no surprise.  They do, however, confirm that Pycnogenol is a valuable nutrient in decreasing inflammation and protecting joint health.

Have you tried Pycnogenol to improve your bone health?

  1. I am ordering your Pigment Corrective right now! So this will not only help reduce my brown spots, but also help prevent osteoarthritis and lower my inflammation? That sounds like a win-win to me.

  2. Yes, I just started taking it as I read it is good for hypertension, so now I will continue for all the other benefits.

  3. Yes, I started it when I took the pigment corrective system and now continue with a daily pycnogenol supplement. I also have my husband taking it as it is supposed to support heart health and promote lower blood pressure too.

  4. I have terrible Fibromyalgia but when I’m taking the Total Skin & Body routinely I feel so much better. I know there is Pyconogenol in the TS&B (the green tabs?) Is the dosage the same as in taking it seperately? I also have Osteoarthritis. My Mom & sister have Osteoporosis which I am trying to avoid! Should I also take the Pigment Correct? I do love the topical!

    • Hi Patti. Adding additional pycnogenol is typically a good idea but we always encourage you to check with your physician prior to starting a new supplement regimen.

  5. I heard that you will be discontinuing the Perricone Pycnogenol supplement. PLEASE DON’T! Perricone is the only place to get quality pycnogenol! It’s been so helpful with veins.
