Mushroom Wisdom: Cordyceps

by

Cordyceps is called “winter worm, summer grass” in China and Japan because it is a fungus that “fruits” out of the head of dead worms or insects.  While this may sound decidedly unappealing, cordyceps is a very rate and special mushroom – one that truly deserves its nickname “elixir of life”.

Cordyceps can be found only at altitudes above 12,000 feet above sea level, in remote areas of southwest China and Nepal.  Cordyceps is one of the most valuable and expensive herbs in traditional Chinese medicine.  Historically, it was available only to the imperial family because of its great rarity and cost.  In 1993, the women athletes of the Chinese national running team achieved nine world records at the World Track and Field Meet in Germany.  One of them broke the record for the 10,000 meter run by an astounding forty-two seconds.  What was their secret?  The athletes gave credit to an intense training schedule and the use of cordyceps.  Since then, this mushroom has received international attention, and its pharmacological properties have been evaluated in detail.  It may be useful as an anti-aging aid and in lowering high cholesterol, protecting the liver, increasing sex drive, and supporting cardiovascular health.

  1. Yes, I have taken this supplement before (after visiting China and having a traditional Chinese medicine consult). I took it for a winter season before running out and most notably felt it really helped my circulation.
