Start Walking!

by

Walking is a great way to sneak extra exercise into your day.  It’s easy, everyone can do it, and even the busiest person can find time during the day for a 20-minute walk.  Here are some great ways to add a walk to your day:

  1. Park your car 10 blocks from work.
  2. If you take public transportation (bus, cab, or subway), get out ten blocks before your destination and walk the rest of the way.
  3. Walk your dog for 30 minutes a day.  If you don’t have a dog, offer to walk a neighbor or friend’s dog.
  4. Take the stairs whenever possible.
  5. In rainy weather, walk swiftly through an indoor mall for thirty minutes.
  6. Park your car far from the entrance to the supermarket, mall or movie theater.

How do you work extra walks into your day?

  1. how about running?! i just read in one of your books, that exercise should be no longer than 45 minutes….what if you are training for a 1/2 marathon? we usually run for an hour…will be more as we add more miles. You were/are a runner….what’s your advice on how to keep training…yet not add stress/cortisol into my body? I am just now learning your principles…so i’m just loading up on Omega 3/fishoil. Will that help? would love any advice…would hate to have to go back to walking to save my skin!

    • An anti inflammatory diet is absolutely key. Incorporate Chia seeds as they are a tremendous vegetarian source of Omega 3 fatty acids and help lubricate and protect joints that can be stressed from consistent long runs. Try to follow long runs with a calming session of yoga to help your body cool down from the exertion.
