Forever Young: Staying Heart-Healthy During Menopause

by

During menopause, a decrease in the body’s levels of antioxidants, including vitamin C, vitamin E, glutahione, and superoxide dismutase, among others, is accompanied by an increase in oxidative stress.  Increased levels of oxidized cholesterol rather than cholesterol levels alone in the body are associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease.  A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole food supplements like Green Magma containing a variety of antioxidants including SOD, as well as supplements of alpha-lipoic acid, CoQ10, omega-3s, vitamin C, astaxanthin, carnitine, and vitamin E, may help improve a woman’s total antioxidant status during menopause, providing protection against excessive oxidative stress, and supporting healthy cardivascular function.  Clinical research has shown that Green Magma may directly address cardiovascular health concerns, since it lowers the level of markers of oxidative stress in the blood and inhibits the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), while increasing serum levels of the antioxidant vitamins C and E.

What steps do you take to maintain cardiovascular health?

  2. Dear Doctor,

Love your site and the interesting information received in a timely manner. I always pass it on to friends.

To enjoy life in a balanced manner, while sometimes giving in to periods of spontaneity increases energy and outlook.
I take a multitude of vitamins daily…most of which you recommend. This regimen has been mine for well over twenty five years.

Prayer and meditation are also an important facet of balance, along with a walking routine and Ta’i Chi Chih..a simplified method of Ta’i Chi, authored by Dr. Justin Stone in the early 70′s.

I read everyday as well and share with friends and relatives whatever the Spirit urges me to tell, as I feel this is part of the reason for my being. Journaling and writing increase the need for creative process, as well as my work as a calligrapher and realtor.

Dance and song lift my personal spirit and energy, as I share a talent in a special church choir and a local ensemble. There is nothing quite like music and its sound that reverberates into a singular offering for both pleasure and soothing peace. Singing promotes joy, good breathing, and when done in with a group, one realizes a sense of community.

A long marriage of almost 48 years, with its ups and downs, good times and difficult continues to warm my senses. My husband is my best friend and we support one another is shared and individual works and interests. Our union is rooted in faith, and that makes all the difference in this changing world. When we are on the dance floor, it is a delightful mode of intimacy that is unmatched. And we have been dancing together since school days, so the rhythm is amazing!

Our adult daughters and “sons”, as well as our five grandsons are gifts of our sustained relationship. Living close to one another enhances our time with each of the boys, as we attend sports activities, school functions, and the dailyness of a ride to school and back, if necessary. For afterall, what is the purpose of life? Each of us need to answer the question personally.

I went through natural perimenopause at 47 years of age, after having a hysterectomy at 29 years of age.
This was a medical necessity after an exploratory operation which rendered these results…no fallopian tube or ovary had developed on the left side, a cystic ovary on the right and endometriosis. For one year following the initial operation I received weekly injections of progesterone to stop monthly menses, for an internal rest.
However, there were breakthroughs due to my young age and when the therapy was completed, the same difficult pain returned along with the endometriosis. Thankfully my doctor did not remove the ovary, but there was no alternative at the time, but to remove the uterus. We accepted the gift of our two healthy daughters and went on with life.

After peri menapause, due to flashes and sweats, another ob-gyn(my former had retired) prescribed estrogen in pill form. Finally, after ingesting this for four years, one day I woke up afer reading Gail Sheehy’s Passages and realized I needed hormone testing. I was not being monitored and wondered if this tiny pill, Ogen, had effected my organs. Since the gyn refused to do a hormone level testing, I sought testing by an endocrinologist. The tests revealed my organs were clear.
I knew from my “enlightenment,” the estroderm patch would most likely be recommended, but waited for the doctor’s advisement. He did advise this therapy, I found a new Ob-Gyn, and the rest is history. The HRT of the estrogen patch has worked and continues to in ways that have proved beneficial for my body, mind, and spirit.

Thank you for your wonderful scientific contributions to both health and beauty. I would welcome meeting you one day.

God bless you and your wonderful work.
