Originating in the mountain region of Piedade, Brazil, royal agaricus has gained popularity in its home country as well as in Asia as a panacea (cure-all). Interest in this medicinal mushroom was first piqued when it was recognized that people living in this region had a significantly lower rate of disease, including lower cancer rates. Research done in Japan in the 1980s and 1990s supports these benefits. Studies have demonstrated the role of royal agaricus for use in the recovery from cancer and in lowering blood glucose and serum cholesterol levels and blood pressure. This mushroom has also been known to posses strong immune enhancement properties. In Brazil, agaricus is called cogumelo de Deus, which translates as “mushroom of God.”
