Reishi, which is called ling zhi in Chinese, mannentake or reishi in Japanese, and young zhi in Korean, is one of the most famous medicinal mushrooms in the world. It has been used as the “mushroom of immortality” for thousands of years. During the last two decades, researchers have found various bioactive constituents that have a wide range of actions, including boosting immune function, specifically natural killer cells, macrophage, and interferon, as well as antiviral and antibacterial functions; cardiovascular support; lowering blood pressure and serum cholesterol; and protecting the heart. Research has also demonstrated resishi’s possible usefulness for allergies, bronchitis, cancer, HIV, inflammation, liver, and protection against radiation.
