Summer Seasonings

Herbs and spices provide wonderful boosts of flavor, but you need to read package labels carefully.  Some, like garlic salt and onion salt, are too high in sodium.  Instead, use only fresh garlic, onions, and scallions for seasoning.  Others, such as chili mix, are high in sugar and salt.  Health food stores often sell herbs and spices in bulk, allowing you to purchase them in small quantities to ensure freshness.  And more and more grocery stores now sell a wide variety of fresh herbs that will add wonderful flavor to your meals.  Recommended spices include ginger, paprika, turmeric, cumin and coriander.
