Smart Summer Sweets

Summer is the perfect time to indulge in an assortment of delectable fruits.  Here are a few of our favorites that are rich in antioxidants but lower on the glycemic index:

  • Blueberries

A few tips:

  • Save fresh fruit for the end of the meal.  This prevents their natural sugars from causing a spike in blood sugar levels, helping to avoid wrinkles and weight gain.
  • Buy organic produce and eat the skins. The greatest concentration of nutrients and fiber are in the skin or right beneath it.
  • Choose fruits with bright or rich colors, this bright hue is a signal that the fruit is high in polyphenols, which are thought to decrease the risk of cancer and heart disease.
