Battle of the Sexes
Why is it that men become distinguished as they get older and women just get old? It may have something to do with what we eat. Research shows that women tend to forgo protein in favor of carbohydrates because of their unique brain chemistry. Women naturally have lower levels of serotonin (a chemical in the brain) than do men. The level of serotonin in women drops even more during the menstrual cycle. Serotonin is the feel-good neurotransmitter that makes it possible for us to experience joy, serenity, and other gifts of life. When your serotonin load falls below your comfort zone, one of the most tempting ways to get it flowing again is to indulge in a big bowl of pasta, a hefty slice of cake, or some other high-carbohydrate fare.
Men on the other hand, have naturally high serotonin levels, so they don’t crave as many carbohydrates, and tend to have diets that consist of larger amounts of protein. Since protein is absolutely essential for repairing the damage done by free radicals, a diet with adequate amounts of protein promotes cellular repair and can help slow the signs of aging. Often people that look older than their chronological age (yet are not suffering from any known disease) invariably have a low protein intake.
So next time you’re feeling a bit tired or blue, skip the cookies and aim for a meal that combines protein, a low-glycemic carbohydrate, and a small amount of unsaturated fat. You’ll avoid a sugar crash and be well on your way to aging gracefully instead of just aging.
