Start Spicin’ It Up!

Here are some delicious spices and herbs to help with inflammation:

Ginger, Turmeric, Galangal, Lemon Grass, Parsley, Mint, Dill, Marjoram, Oregano, Rosemary, Thyme, and Basil.

Anti-aging benefits: Extremely high in anti-inflammatory antioxidants and other anti-inflammatory phytonutrients. The yellow pigment in turmeric (curcumin) is rich in antioxidants (curcuminoids) that exert potent anti-Alzheimer’s effects in animals. Turmeric (like cinnamon) also has powerful blood sugar-stabilizing effects and can halt the changes caused by excessive alcohol consumption that lead to liver damage.

In clinical trials, ginger and turmeric have shown the ability to ease arthritis symptoms, since they act on the same inflammation/pain pathways as prescription COX-2 inhibitor drugs (e.g., Vioxx and Celebrex), but without any of the significant adverse side effects associated with those drugs.

How can you start to incorporate some of these healing spices and herbs into your diet?

  1. So glad to see this article on spices. After hearing so much about the potential for turmeric to prevent Alzheimer’s development, I decided to try incorporating it into my cooking. It’s great on eggs, green vegetables, and of course SALMON! The flavor is something between ginger and black pepper.

Another idea for fresh spices such as basil, rosemary and oregano is to grow them at home. That way you can be sure they are growing free from pesticides that would undo their good effects.

  2. This is soo true. I been taking supplements for years now that include these herbs and more. You can purchase this at most health food stores. Is by “New Chapter” called Zyflamend.

  3. Dr. Perricone it think you’re wonderful!! I love all of the great tips that you give. They help out so much. Before I started with your program I was so confused about a lot of things from different ones who didn’t know and heard a lot of myths. Thank God for you!!
