Start Cleaning Up Your Skin!

Don’t fall for the old myth that the best way to wash the skin is to use cold cream or just plain old water.  We recommend you use liquid cleansers or mild bar soaps that are applied by hand, then rinse off thoroughly with lukewarm water.  This style of gentle yet thorough cleansing will remove stale oil, dirt, and dead dry cells without damaging or drying the skin.

To avoid irritation, stay away from scrubbing grains, abrasive pads, wash clothes and astringents.  These can disturb the skin and produce aging inflammation.  Don’t overwash. Cleansing twice a day – in the morning and before bedtime – will keep your skin fresh and comfortable.  Follow these suggestions and your skin will thank you!

Do you need to switch to less irritating skin cleaning methods?

  1. I understand the importance of gentle washing, but how can I effectively remove makeup without disturbing my skin’s natural barrier?

I use Cerave because I use prescription topical acne products, and although Cerave is very gentle and moisturizing, it never seems to remove my mineral makeup, concealer, etc. very effectively. Sometimes I end up washing twice and then my skin starts to feel tight/irritated.

    Any suggestions, Dr. Perricone?

    • Here are some steps to properly cleanse your face:
      1. Use a liquid cleanser or mild soap bar. Work into a lather, massaging in gentle circular motions for several seconds without rushing this step.
      2. Rinse off thoroughly with room temperature water to remove stale oil, dirt, and dead dry cells. Never rinse with hot water as it can dry the skin.
      3. Avoid irritation by using products with scrubbing grains, abrasive pads and astringents as they can disturb the skin and produce inflammation.
      4. Choose a cleanser rich in antioxidants and such Alpha Lipoc Acid, DMAE or Vitamin C Ester.
      4. Don’t over wash. Cleanse twice daily to keep your skin fresh and radiant. Avoid the ultimate skin sin: going to bed without washing your face.
