We bet you didn’t know animals can make their own vitamin C. It’s made in their livers from a simple sugar called glucose. Unfortunately, we humans can’t manufacture our own store of vitamin C; our livers lack the enzyme that would make this possible. So if we do not add lots of this vitamin to our diets, we quickly become deficient. This can lead to a host of symptoms, such as loss of muscle tone, wrinkles, and weakened immunity.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to add vitamin C to your diet. Non-inflammatory food sources of vitamin C include broccoli, cantaloupe, citrus fruits, strawberries and tomatoes. If you’re taking a supplement, look for capsules of the vitamin or add powdered vitamin C crystals to water or tea, as hard vitamin C tablets tend to pass through the digestive tract intact.
