The 3 Apple-a-Day Weight Loss Secret
![]()
There more than a grain of truth to the old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!” Apples have landed on our list of top 10 weight-loss foods.
As we have seen, a number of studies bear out the fact that apples are a wonderful addition to any weight loss plan. However, one of my favorite stories on the role of apples in weight loss comes from an experiment conducted by Tammi Flynn, a registered dietician with a master’s degree in nutrition science from Texas A&M University. Tammi, who lives in heart of apple country, in the state of Washington, came up with the concept of the “3 Apple-a-Day Plan”. Her goal was to introduce more produce into her clients’ diets with the locally grown apples. Tammi observed that when her clients added a fresh apple to each meal, compared to just eating a low-fat diet and exercise alone they had a significantly greater weigh loss. Just how great she would soon find out!
Tammi, a fitness buff, was working at a local gym. She started a Get in Shape Challenge at the gym, using the plan of 3 apples per day, along with a healthy diet of low-glycemic carbohydrates, healthy fats and quality protein. At the end of the 12-week challenge, 346 people had lost a phenomenal 6,126 lbs. of fat (that’s an average of about 18 pounds per person). And there was no question the apples played an important roe in the success of the challenge.
As an active researcher, I welcome your comments and suggestions.

Great information, thank you for sharing!
Wow! I like this one. I think I am going to start adding more apples to my diet. Thanks for posting.
Ever since I read Dr. Perricone’s first book years ago I added apples to my diet. I eat three Granny apples a day, because it helps somehow to keep a noticeable face and body lift I have noticed. In addition, I eat a small red delicious Washington apple when I am craving sweets. I didn’t know until just now that I read this article, this is probably what has helped me to keep my weight in check.

Interesting! There are so many different kinds of apples.Any specifics or just apples in general?
Also, is pectin found in apples, the key to weight loss or is it the fiber?
I truly enjoy all the info I receive from you!
I found this really interesting! I think good eating begets more good eating. When we start to turn towards healthy food, it starts changing our view of food and it’s purpose. I know for me, apples really fill me up and satisfy any craving I have for something sweeter. This is a good reminder to add more to my diet! Those results sure are encouraging! Great post!
I love all kinds of apples! I have noticed the
clarity & lift as well as high energy after eating an apple a day for a few says I knew that Pectin was good for digestion but your article shed a different light . I also (in the past) always commented on how much better I felt after a meal of Salmon! I thought I was pretty nutrition savvy but I am learning so much more thanks to you sharing your knowledge with us!
