Magnesium Magic
We don’t always have to look for exotic substances in the field or in the test tube to discover proverbial magic bullets that can literally transform our lives. Such is the case with magnesium. Often overlooked, magnesium is a vital nutrient that has many critical function. Numerous enzyme systems that are needed for the transfer of energy within our bodies require magnesium, which also plays a part in the normal functioning of muscles and nerves.
Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body, and approximately 50% of total body magnesium is found in bone. Magnesium can be taken as a supplement; however it is vitally important to include magnesium-rich foods in your diet. Good dietary sources include sea vegetables, peanuts and green leafy vegetables such as spinach, collards, dandelion greens, peas, parsley, garlic, celery, cauliflower and cabbage. Other good choices include Brussels sprouts, asparagus, avocados, blackberries , green olives, chives, kelp, soybeans, wild rice, oats, almonds, Brazil nuts and sunflower seeds.
Magnesium helps to:
- Ease anxiety
- Stabilize mood
- Decrease the release of the stress hormone cortisol, known to disrupt sleep and promote the increase of abdominal fat
- Prevent metabolic changes that may contribute to heart attacks and strokes
- Metabolize carbohydrates and influence the release and activity of insulin
- Regulate blood pressure, because of its natural muscle relaxant ability
- Ease muscle cramps

I love reading this stuff! I ate a ton of Brussel sprouts at dinner tonight. I also had some Sunflower seeds for a snack. So, I must be all set with my Magnesium for today, who knew. I do wonder though, how much is too much?
Will Dr. Perricone have a new book, DVD, CD or any support material out soon? I like to collect and keep up on his collection.
Thanks.
Tina
Dr.
Wholefoods sells a magnesium product called “Calm”. Is this a good source for supplementing magnesium?
Thank you,
