Vitamin C: One Kind for Your Inside, Another for Your Outside
![]()
There is much confusion about a fat-soluble form of vitamin C called vitamin C ester. An ester is simply a chemical compound that combines an acid and an alcohol. Ascorbyl palmitate – the best known ester of vitamin C – is made by adding a fatty acid from palm oil to L-ascorbic acid. The resulting chemical bond creates a fat-soluble compound that contains vitamin C.
Ascorbyl palmitate protects the critical cell membranes in skin tissue. Esters like ascorbyl palmitate should be the vitamin C forms of choice for skin care products because they are absorbed and retained by the skin substantially better than L-ascorbic acid.
