Keep on the Grass Part 2 – Secrets of Breast Cancer Prevention

cow-cropIn our last blog we learned that animals that are raised solely on wholesome grass, out in the fresh air in lush, green pastures, provide a healthy and wholesome alternative to grain-fed meat and dairy products.

Like wild salmon, grass-fed beef is an excellent source of high-quality omega-3 essential fatty acids, as well as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).

Grass-fed beef is up to three times leaner than grain-fed beef and can have up to 15 fewer calories per ounce than meat from a grain-fed cow. In grass-fed beef, omega-3 fats comprise 7% of the total fat content as compared to only 1% in grain-fed beef.

CLA has many benefits, including the protection of lean muscle mass and the reduction of body fat, especially in the abdominal area. This is an important fact to keep in mind if your goal is to have abs like Eva Mendes, Jessica Biel or Matthew McConaughey.

And that’s not all. A number of studies indicate that CLA inhibits the proliferation of some cancers such as breast, colorectal, prostate and stomach cancer. Lack of CLA also contributes to increased fat, especially in the abdominal area. However, with the dietary change from grass to grain, levels of CLA dramatically decreased in meat and dairy products. It is no wonder that as a nation we now have an epidemic of diseases, such as cancer, increased diabetes, heart disease and accelerated aging.

Here in New England, the beautiful, pastoral Stannard family farm in Benson, Vermont (www.vermontnaturalbeef.com), is the source that I use for grass-fed beef delivered right to my door. You can also find local farms in your area by visiting www.eatwild.com.

As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions.

  1. Dr Perricone,

Thank you for helping everyone make better food choices. My family spends more money at the grocery store buying only grass fed beef/lamb, dairy and organic/free range eggs and produce than the average family. Sure it hurts to spend the extra dollars, but how many people spend so much more on medicine that cause so many other symptoms? How many people miss days from school and work? How do they really feel, eating food that really is not meant to be, full of toxins. I am sure their bodies don’t feel that great. I am always so amazed at how people don’t pay attention to what they put into their bodies. Also by supporting our organic and grass feeding farmers, we are preserving a sustainable way of life. If we keep demanding food at cheap prices, more chemicals will be put into our soil, plants and animals to supposedly make them grow bigger faster (and to keep pests from attacking them). We will not even have time to think about trying to keep our beauty, as our bodies will be ravished by disease. Please keep informing your readers about the importance of truly healthy foods and that all the chemicals we add to our food supply end up in our water and air as well…leading to more environmental toxins. Truly bad for the skin!
